Enchanted Garden of Lights at Rock City

This is the big one, and it’s been running for 32 years. Millions of lights fill Rock City’s trails on top of Lookout Mountain, and Santa visits in Carter Cliffs through Dec. 23. It runs nightly Nov. 13 to Dec. 31, 2026, closed Christmas Eve, from 4 to 10:30 p.m. (11:30 p.m. on select nights).

Ticket tips: Tickets are timed entry and sold online only, with prices that change by date and time: $31-$49 for adults and $21-$39 for kids 3-12. Popular nights sell out, tickets are non-refundable (you can reschedule up to two hours ahead), and Rock City says it isn’t offering coupons this season. Arrive no more than 15 minutes before your entry time. The trail isn’t fully stroller-friendly, so a baby carrier helps. Rock City: Enchanted Garden of Lights

Asian Lantern Festival at the Chattanooga Zoo

Hundreds of glowing lantern sculptures, some up to 16 feet tall, take over the zoo after dark. The 2026 theme is Wildlife Wonderland, with tigers, red pandas and polar bears in light. The festival opens Nov. 18 and runs 5:30-9:30 p.m. on select nights through the season. Event listings show tickets at about $14-$23.50. Chattanooga Zoo

Holidays at Ruby Falls

From Nov. 27 to Dec. 24, Ruby Falls decorates its castle and lights up the Village Plaza. You can hang a wish in the Forest of Wishes and grab cocoa at the Castle Cafe without buying a cave ticket. Santa visits on select days, and the guided cave tours to the underground waterfall keep running (timed entry, sold online). Ruby Falls events

Reindeer on the Riverfront and the Lighted Boat Parade

The free kickoff to the season happens the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 27, and it’s moving to Coolidge Park on the North Shore this year while the riverfront parks are upgraded. Live reindeer are out 4-6:30 p.m., free Santa photos run 4:30-7:30 p.m., the 46th annual Lighted Boat Parade cruises 7-8 p.m., and fireworks follow at 8 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket. You can walk over the Walnut Street Bridge from south-shore parking. River City Company

North Pole Limited

Little ones (and grown-ups who love trains) will want the Tennessee Valley Railroad’s North Pole Limited, a roughly 75-minute ride on a heated, decorated vintage train with cocoa, a cookie, a story and a visit from Santa at your seat. It runs on select dates Nov. 13 to Dec. 23. Day tickets are $38 and evening tickets $45 per person (ages 1+), with private-table upgrades. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. TVRM: North Pole Limited

Tips for a smoother lights night

  • Book the ticketed ones now. Rock City and the North Pole Limited sell out, especially Fridays, Saturdays and the week before Christmas.
  • Go on a weeknight. Smaller crowds, and at Rock City often a lower price.
  • Dress for the mountain. Lookout Mountain can be noticeably colder and windier than downtown.
  • Plan the free nights. Reindeer on the Riverfront and the Ruby Falls plaza cost nothing, which balances out a ticketed night.
  • Check before you go. Weather can close outdoor events, and dates and prices change. Each event’s official page is linked above.

Planning a lights night by age

Little kids (under 6): The North Pole Limited is built for this age, with Santa coming to your seat, and the ride is about 75 minutes, so it fits before bedtime on a day departure. The Ruby Falls plaza is also easy with toddlers: no ticket needed for the lights or the Castle Cafe, and you can leave whenever you want.

School-age kids: The Asian Lantern Festival at the zoo is a hit, because the giant lantern animals change every year and there are interactive displays to play on. Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights is a longer walk, about the right stamina for this age, and Santa is there through Dec. 23.

Teens and adults: Rock City on a weeknight is the most “wow” for grown-ups, with the lights set among the rock formations and the mountain views. For a free date night, bring a blanket to the Lighted Boat Parade and fireworks on Nov. 27.

Getting there and parking

  • Rock City is at the top of Lookout Mountain in Georgia. Allow extra time for the winding drive up, and don’t arrive more than 15 minutes before your entry time, since early arrivals clog the lots and lines.
  • Ruby Falls is on the Tennessee side of Lookout Mountain, on Scenic Highway. The plaza lights are near the main building and gift shop.
  • The Chattanooga Zoo is in Warner Park, a few minutes east of downtown.
  • Reindeer on the Riverfront is at Coolidge Park on the North Shore this year. Organizers point to parking lots near the park and say the Walnut Street Bridge will be open for walkers coming from the south shore.
  • The North Pole Limited leaves from TVRM’s Grand Junction Depot on Cromwell Road in East Chattanooga, not the downtown Choo Choo.
